CMS Provides Guidance To Strengthen Organ Donation Patient Protections And Accountability

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released new guidance “to strengthen public trust and ensure patients and their families are treated with dignity and care throughout the organ donation process.” The guidance reinforces safeguards through a Quality, Safety and Oversight memo and a State Operations Manual appendix update. CMS also will continue to strengthen oversight of the Organ Procurement Organizations and donor hospitals.
