Mosaic Life Care at St. Joseph, Medical Center, in St. Joseph, Mo., was honored with the Missouri Hospital Association’s 2026 Aim For Excellence Award for quality improvement leading to better, more timely care for patients. The award was presented Nov. 4 at MHA’s 104th Annual Convention in Kansas City, Mo.

“Well-managed emergency department resources have a ripple effect throughout a hospital, improving services beyond the individuals in the waiting room seeking care,” said Jon D. Doolittle, MHA president and CEO. “A wholistic approach to time and resource management improves quality and the patient experience of care.”

Between 2022 and 2025, Mosaic Life Care designed and implemented a systems approach to patient throughput by uniting separate stakeholder teams around a single patient-management mission. The project goal included improving patient flow and capacity management by addressing hospital congestion, emergency department boarding, inconsistent discharge performance and variation in workflows. The new system delivered significantly reduced patient boarding, a leave-without-being-seen rate drop from 6.7% to less than 2%, 15-minute transfer acceptance and an increase to 30% of patients discharged by noon. Overall, the project increased patient satisfaction, dropped length of stay by more than a half day and expanded patient-care capacity within the system.

“Teams across our system worked together to make this initiative possible, always keeping the needs of our patients at the center of the work,” said Mosaic CEO Mike Poore. “It was especially important that we improve access and reduce the number of patients who left before being seen. When someone comes to us for care, we want to connect them with the help they need as quickly as possible. I am proud of the team for earning this award and for the high-quality care they provide our patients every day.”
