MHA Shares Proposed CJR-X Model Summary

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has proposed expanding the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement Expanded (CJR-X) Model, which would affect Missouri hospitals. If finalized, beginning Oct. 1, 2027, Inpatient Prospective Payment System and Outpatient Prospective Payment System hospitals — excluding those participating in the Transforming Episode Accountability Model — would be held accountable for the quality of care and discharge coordination for patients receiving joint replacements. 

Designed to generate savings while maintaining quality of care, the CJR-X model would include both inpatient and outpatient settings and hold hospitals financially accountable for a full 90 days after discharge. 

In response to an increased number of inquiries, the Missouri Hospital Association developed the CJR-X Model Summary to provide hospitals with an overview of who would be affected, how the model would work, the reasons for the proposed expansion and MHA’s recommendations to CMS.
