House Ways And Means Subcommittee On Health Holds Workforce Hearing

The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health held a hearing about workforce needs to ensure an adequate supply of physicians.

Jason Shenefield, president and CEO of Phelps Health in Rolla, Mo., testified about what rural hospitals need to develop and sustain residency programs.

Witness recommendations included adding bridge payments for new residency programs, resetting the per resident caps, fixing the Medicare indirect medical education payment limitation for sole community and Medicare dependent hospitals, and extending the full-time equivalent caps from five years to 10 years for new programs.
