CDC Updates Childhood Immunization Recommendations

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its recommendations for U.S. childhood immunizations on Jan. 5, dividing childhood immunizations guidance into three categories: immunizations recommended for all children, immunizations recommended for high-risk groups or populations, and immunizations based on shared clinical decision-making.

Of note, all immunizations recommended by the CDC as of Dec. 31, 2025, will continue to be covered by Affordable Care Act insurance plans and federal insurance programs including Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program and the Vaccines for Children program.

The CDC will publish an updated Child and Adolescent Immunization Schedule by Age for health care providers. Other organizations publish their own vaccine recommendations. Some mirror CDC recommendations while others differ, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Recommended Child and Adolescent Immunization Schedule. Providers should review their chosen schedule(s) for potential gaps in private, ACA and federal insurance program coverage that could impact their patients.
