Empowering Hospitals With Real-Time Payer Insights 

Hospitals across Missouri continue to face mounting challenges in managing payer relationships — from downcoding and delayed payments to denials and increasingly complex contract negotiations. These pressures directly affect fiscal stability and the ability to serve patients and communities. 

To help hospitals navigate these challenges, the Missouri Hospital Association and the Hospital Industry Data Institute have launched the Payer Performance Initiative — a statewide effort focused on improving financial visibility, payer collaboration and advocacy through better data. 

As part of this initiative, MHA and HIDI are partnering with Hyve Health to introduce the Vitality Index Payer Scorecard, a powerful new tool designed to help hospitals strengthen their payer strategy through actionable insights.

MHA and HIDI are committed to empowering hospitals with tools and data that drive informed decision-making and fairer payer relationships. 

The Payer Performance Initiative and Vitality Index Payer Scorecard represent a shared step toward a more transparent, equitable and data-driven future for Missouri hospitals. 

About the Vitality Index Payer Scorecard 

The Vitality Index Payer Scorecard leverages 837 and 835 transaction data along with Claim Adjustment Reason Codes (CARC) and Remittance Advice Remark Codes (RARC) to provide real-time visibility into payer behavior, denials and payment trends across all major insurance product types — including managed care, Medicare Advantage, Medicaid managed care and more. 

The scorecard delivers a comprehensive view of hospital financial performance and payer relationships, helping leaders to: 

  • benchmark payer performance across peers
  • identify friction points that impact cash flow and revenue
  • improve transparency and accountability in payer relationships
  • strengthen MHA's advocacy through credible, timely financial data

The Payer Performance Initiative and the Vitality Index Payer Scorecard together help level the data playing field, empowering hospitals with the clarity needed to improve financial outcomes and payer collaboration.

Help Shape the Future of Payer Performance  

MHA and HIDI are inviting hospitals across Missouri to take part in the Payer Performance program. This effort will help refine the Vitality Index Payer Scorecard to ensure it meets the operational, analytical and strategic needs of hospitals statewide. By participating, your hospital will: 

  • gain early access to the Vitality Index Payer Scorecard
  • collaborate with HIDI and Hyve Health during setup and evaluation
  • help shape statewide payer performance benchmarking
  • contribute to a shared initiative that strengthens hospital advocacy and financial stability. 

The Payer Performance Initiative will ultimately replace the Insurance Performance Scorecard and complement existing resources such as the Hospital Performance Insights Dashboard and HIDI Fiscal Optics®. Coupled with MHA's financial advocacy and the Payer Pulse Newsletter, this initiative paints a clearer picture of payer behavior across Missouri.
